Environmental Warriors
At the end of Term 1, four of our Year 5 students attended the Caring for Our Common Home – A Call to Action! Primary Student WEN Day. One of the Eco activities was to write a school creation prayer which will be included in an e-book of all of the School Creation Prayers and will be sent out to all schools in the Diocese. Thanks to our Eco Ambassadors – Max, Philip, Savannah and Jessica, we are proud to share it with our school community.
PRAYER FOR CREATION
God of the Universe,
You created a world of beauty and splendour as a gift to us.
We sense your presence in the warmth of the sun,
the moonlit sky, the beauty of the landscape and the vast depths of the oceans
Through your guidance and presence help us to respect and protect all living things
and teach us to be responsible stewards of your creation caring for our common home.
Welcome to the Environmental Warriors News
As the Eco ambassadors of the Francis of Assisi school, we would like to share with you what our current environmental initiatives are at the school.
Have you heard of “Munch and Crunch”?
Every day teachers schedule a time in the classroom to allow children to eat fruit and vegetables which can help improve the students' ability to concentrate and learn.
Where do all the food scraps go?
In each classroom, there is a container where students can place their food scraps. Two times a week the environmental team collects the containers and empties the contents into our worm farm and most of it goes into our Green cones.
What is Worm Farming? Worm Farming is another way to dispose of unwanted food waste and the end result is a liquid fertiliser. Food scraps are placed in the worm farm regularly and these worms eat their way through it. Liquid fertilizer (worm juice) produced by the worm farm is an excellent free organic fertiliser, which can be used on any plant. At our school, we use the worm juice in our vegetable and flower garden.
Helpful hint for parents.
Cut the fruit and vegetables into small pieces so they are easier to eat and less waste will be in the containers. Smaller scraps are easier for the worms to digest.
