First Holy Communion Program

Please keep in your prayers the children in our school and parish who, in

preparation for celebrating their First Holy Communion, have just completed their first week of workshops.  The children received their stoles last weekend at their commitment Mass and chose a prayer sponsor from the parish community.  For this weekend, the children will present their reflections on 2 of their favourite stories from the Gospels during the offertory procession.

World Mission Month
Each year, Catholic Mission uses the month of October to do its main fundraising and awareness-raising campaign, ‘Socktober’.  As part of mission month, we have been using the following prayer during our morning assemblies:

Compassionate God,
draw us to your loving heart.
In mercy, teach us to forgive as the Father forgives.
In mercy, challenge us to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
In mercy, transform us with your Spirit to welcome those we meet;
and give us strength as we journey in faith.
Amen

One of the initiatives that Catholic Mission likes to promote during Socktober is the game of soccer and the unifying power that sport has.  It helps to develop respect for other people, like teammates and opponents, as well as an appreciation for hard work and humility in both victory and defeat.

Like children around the world, many children in developing countries love to play the game of soccer.  Children in developing countries, though, sometimes don’t have access to the kinds of soccer balls we have here in Australia.  Instead, they use recycled materials and create their own soccer balls.  If you are interested in involving your family in making a recycled ‘sockball’, click here for a step-by-step guide.  This could be a great opportunity for the family to learn about how balls are made in countries supported by Catholic Mission.
