Dear Parents and Carers,
Pope Francis established the 1st of September as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, encouraging the Catholic communities around the world to pray for our common home. The day is inspired by Pope Francis' landmark encyclical Laudato Si’, which calls on "every person living on this planet" to care for our shared Earth. He calls us all to celebrate this opportune moment to “reaffirm [our] personal vocation to be stewards of creation, to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which he has entrusted to our care and to implore his help for the protection of creation, as well as his pardon for the sins committed against the world in which we live.”
Pope Francis shared this message, “I strongly encourage the faithful to pray in these days of the Season of Creation. This season of increased prayer and effort on behalf of our common home begins on 1st September and ends on 4th October, the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. It is an opportunity to draw closer to our brothers and sisters of the various Christian confessions. I think in particular of the Orthodox faithful, who have celebrated this Day for thirty years.” It is also a season to reflect on our lifestyles and how our daily decisions about food, consumption, transportation, use of water, energy and many other material goods.
Thank you for taking part in our Wellbeing Wednesday activities. Please see below a snapshot of how our students and their families celebrated World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation.

This week our builders have been busy forming up the new external entrance ramp and pouring concrete in and around the administration block. New windows and doors are next on the agenda for installation. Below are some progress pictures from Week 7.

Wellbeing Support
Our School Counsellor Barbara Woods and our Pastoral Support Worker Cecilia Welch regularly share wellbeing resources with our staff and provide resources for our newsletter. If your family or child requires additional wellbeing support, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher, who can connect you with Barbara or Cecilia.
As the vast majority of students continue to learn from home, I once again express my deep gratitude for your contribution to supporting the safety of our students, staff and school families.
Last week, the NSW Premier and Education Minister announced that a return to face-to-face learning will begin from Monday 25 October. Please see the letter below that was sent to all families on Compass last week.
As learning from home continues the Catholic Education Office COVID-19 Response Team has provided the following information to help you understand the reason schools are urging all families to keep their children home at this time if they are able to.
Is COVID-19 affecting children and young people? |
Yes. NSW Health data shows that cases in children aged 10-19 are higher than all other age groups except for those aged 20-39. The NSW Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant, has said “we are seeing more infections from children spreading, which is not the characteristic we had observed with previous strands.” A recent Sydney Morning Herald article explained that “children aged under nine are increasingly testing positive to COVID-19 in NSW, with 44 cases of the contagious Delta variant detected in one day and young children accounting for almost 15% of infections in the past fortnight.” (Source: Forty-four children test positive to COVID-19 in a day in NSW, 12 August 2021) |
What COVID-safe measures are in place to protect students and staff? |
We continue to follow all the recommended COVID-safe practices for a Level 4 school. However, NSW Health continues to remind us that any time anyone leaves their home and comes into contact with people from other households, their risk of contracting COVID-19 is increased. NSW Health has confirmed that more than 70% of COVID-19 transmission in the current outbreak occurs within households. This means that if one person in a household contracts COVID-19 there is a very high probability that the rest of the household will also become positive. To keep yourself and your family as safe as possible, you should only send your child to school for supervision if it is absolutely not possible for them to learn from home. |
Why are schools open for supervision if it’s safer to keep children home?
|
The decision by NSW Health to allow schools to remain open for supervision is to ensure that those students who have absolutely no option to learn from home (e.g. the children of frontline health workers and others in similar circumstances) can continue learning while the stay-at-home order is in place. The NSW Government continues to reinforce the message that the safest option for everyone in the current circumstances – and the best way to avoid contracting COVID-19 and passing it on to your loved ones – is to stay home except when you absolutely must go out. |
When can I send my child to school for supervision?
|
The current Public Health Order makes it clear that it is only acceptable to “leave home for education if it is not possible to do it at home”. In line with this government directive, families are only able to send their children to school at this time if there is absolutely no option for them to learn from home. The following would be considered reasons why this may be the case:
Students have access to the same learning materials and experience whether they are at school or at home, and there is no advantage for students who are supervised at school. |
What if my child wants to go to school?
|
We understand that many students are missing school and their friends. However, their safety and the safety of all students, staff and school families must be our shared priority right now. It is also important to remember that normal school activities are not taking place, the vast majority of students are learning from home, and very few teachers are on site each day. Schools are required to only have the minimum number of staff on site to provide supervision for students only. This is to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission and protect the staff and students who have no option but to attend school. |
Just like you, many of our staff have school-age children at home and they are very aware of just how challenging it can be to balance working from home while supporting a child’s remote learning.
Thank you for your understanding and support during this incredibly difficult time.
Stay safe and go gently.
Daily Decisions
We all use Mathematics daily in what we do. Involve your child in using numbers to solve problems and make those everyday decisions with you. For example:
- “Do we have enough plates and utensils for all the guests coming for dinner tonight?”
- “We are doubling this recipe. How much of all the ingredients will we need?”
- “We are fertilizing the lawn. The fertilizer bag covers three square meters. How many will we need?”
- “This store is selling the game you want for 20% off of $27.00. That store is selling the same game for $19.99. Where should we shop?”
Time for Creativity
It is just as important to encourage your child to take some time to be creative. Draw, play with Lego, paint, dance, or sing. For further ideas, below is a list of activities for early learners and children in primary school, ideas from education.gov.nsw.au.

Religious Education & Parish News
The Diocese of Wollongong is presently reviewing parish preparation for the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation. Bishop Brian would like to invite parents and caregivers to participate in a survey that seeks to collect information regarding "what they believe to be important for their children in presenting them for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist”. Below is a link to a letter to parents and caregivers from Bishop Brian inviting them to take part in this consultation process and providing a link to the survey.
Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey.
Confirmation
Due to the continued lockdown restrictions, Confirmation will not go ahead on the 14 September. The Bishop’s office will be communicating with Fr Damien about the procedures that may take place when restrictions are lifted. We know this is disappointing but unfortunately, we must follow restrictions.
Reconciliation and First Communion
As has been communicated with Confirmation- the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion are also on hold until restrictions are lifted.

Book Week 21-27 August 2021
"Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds"
We were unable to celebrate Book Week in person this year. It is an event that we all look forward to. The fun of parading as our favourite book character, the joy of sharing our reading experiences, and the excitement of engaging with the Book of the Year titles. Thank you for immersing yourself in books and discovering 'Old Worlds, New Worlds, and Other Worlds'.

Thank you again Mrs Welch it is greatly appreciated. The children love it!

Year 2 have been doing such a fantastic job with their Remote Learning! We have been busy reading our PM and EPIC books online, enjoying Wellbeing Wednesdays, celebrating Book Week and have been engaged in a variety of Maths activities.
Our Book Week celebrations have been a highlight. We have enjoyed reading ‘Not Cute’ By Phillip Bunting and ‘No! Never!’ By Libby Hathorn. The books and activities were enjoyed by everyone.
Another highlight of our Remote Learning is our Zoom meetings! We enjoy seeing each other and playing games on Zoom together. Keep up the great work 2 Blue, we are so proud of you!
We would like to wish all the wonderful fathers and father figures a happy Father's Day on Sunday!
Mrs Mansbridge & Mrs Zaffonato

In Year 3 we are learning about Relationships and Sharing God’s Love in Religion. We enjoyed reading a book called ‘The Rainbow Fish.’ The Rainbow Fish is an award-winning book about a beautiful fish who finds friendship and happiness when he learns to share. He learns that being the most beautiful fish in the sea can be lonely. Ultimately, he learns that there is more to be gained by sharing his special qualities than by keeping them all to himself.
In 3 Gold we created our own Rainbow Fish, and have shared some below.

R U OK? Day - Thursday 9 September

R U OK? Day (Thursday 9 September 2021) is our national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, “Are you OK?” and support those struggling with life's ups and downs. R U OK? seeks to create a world where we’re all connected. We’re never too young to look out for one another and meaningfully connect. Children cannot be expected to fix someone’s problems, nor know the best way to help and support. However they can be encouraged to listen to what their friend is saying, let them know they care and tell a teacher, school counsellor or trusted adult if they are worried about their friend.
By promoting an environment of positive peer support and accessing support channels via parents and adults, children can learn that asking, ‘Are you OK?’ is a key life skill.

We advise the Catholic Education Office is currently in the process of crediting school fee accounts for activities the students, unfortunately, have not been able to participate in due to COVID. The credits applicable will be shown on your account next term in the Compass Parent Portal. Please do not hesitate to contact the School Office if you have any questions.
Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) will be offering support to families, conscious of the significant financial impact that many may be experiencing as a result of the continuing COVID-19 restrictions. Please find below detailed information regarding support for families through COVID-19 restrictions and school fee payments. As always, please do not hesitate to contact the school about any matters you wish to discuss, especially those related to financial hardship.
Book Club catalogues are available to view and order online. Please see the attached brochure below to view Issue 6. Orders can be placed online via LOOP. Click on the link below and select home delivery when ordering for this issue.
Unfortunately, our annual Book Fair will not be scheduled this year, due to the ever-changing circumstances. So Book Club will be the perfect way to purchase some books and help support our school.
When do the students wear their Summer Uniform?
When students begin their return to school from 25 October, under Covid directives, they can return in their summer school uniform.
With the holidays fast approaching this period is a wonderful opportunity to renew labels on all pieces of your child’s uniform. Please ensure all uniform pieces are clearly labeled with your child’s name using a permanent marker. Students should know where their name is marked for easy checking. Please encourage your child to place all items straight into their bag rather than leaving them on the playground or in the classroom.
School Uniforms are available for purchase online via Lowes online, link below. Please order with enough time for the current delivery delays.
The Connecting Neighbours Grants are now open click here for more information
We know that connecting with people is difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we're looking for projects that help people connect with their neighbours safely.
We’re looking for ideas which will bring people together and help neighbours get to know each other. We are open to projects that could be online, creative ways of connecting without meeting up, or face-to-face projects for a time in the future.
Individuals and Community Groups are invited to apply.
A neighbourhood could include a street, a few houses, a group, or a place where you socialise.
