Welcome back to the 2025 school year!
It has been wonderful to welcome our students and families back over the past few days and to see so many parents and carers on the school grounds. I am delighted to see how quickly our students have settled in and engaged in their learning. It’s truly heartening to witness the joy of reconnecting with friends and staff.
As we begin this new school year, I find great inspiration in last Sunday’s Gospel from Luke 2:22-40. In this passage, we reflect on the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, where Simeon and Anna recognise Him as the fulfilment of God’s promise. Just as they found joy and purpose in their encounter with Jesus, may we too find joy and purpose in our journey together at St Francis of Assisi. Let us embrace each day with gratitude and a commitment to nurturing faith, learning, and well-being.
Thank you to our dedicated staff for their hard work in preparing for the start of the year. Their commitment ensures that our students have a safe, nurturing, and enriching environment to learn and grow.
To our new Kindergarten students, and Maloni and Chloe (Year 1) and their families who are new to our school community, a warm welcome! We are excited to embark on this journey with you and look forward to all that we will achieve together.
This year, we continue working towards our vision: to be an engaged Catholic community, inspired by the Franciscan spirit, empowering all learners to reach their full potential. Our Annual Improvement Plan focuses on improving student growth in faith and learning, particularly in the area of assessment.
We look forward to working in partnership with parents and carers to build strong learning communities that enhance student faith, learning, and well-being. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child, and our children benefit most when adults work together in a respectful partnership.
May this school year be filled with joy, growth, and countless opportunities for each of our students to shine.

Carpet Project
The staff and students were excited to return from the break to see the newly installed carpet in their classrooms and the remaining administration spaces. These refreshed areas look fantastic and beautifully complement the interior painting completed last year. A special thank you to the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong for their ongoing support throughout this project.
Connecting with the Community
We look forward to engaging and communicating with families on a regular basis through the following avenues. Please continue to use these forms of communication to keep updated with what is happening in and around our school.
The School Newsletter is emailed to families in even weeks of term. It is also available on the School Website.
The St Francis of Assisi School Website - https://www.sfawdow.catholic.edu.au
Includes information about our school.
The Compass App enables parents to engage closely with the school and ensures parents are informed by email, SMS, or push notifications. In addition, the app has many features that allow parents to actively engage within the school.
Our school's Facebook and Instagram pages keep families and the wider community up to date with school events. Photos and videos of activities and events are shared regularly. If you have Facebook or Instagram, you are welcome to like our page.
Class teachers will use Seesaw to share information about the learning that is taking place in the classroom and provide the students with an opportunity to share their work with families. The school email - info@sfawdow.catholic.edu.au is another way for families to communicate with the school.
Thank you to our families for the way our students have returned in their school uniforms. It is wonderful to see them taking pride in their appearance, reflecting their commitment to our school community and values.
As a gentle reminder, we ask for your continued support in maintaining our uniform expectations. This includes:
- Ensuring students do not wear nail polish to school.
- Keeping hair neat and tidy, with haircuts in line with school guidelines.
- Avoiding costume or plastic jewellery, aside from permitted items on our uniform policy.
Your partnership in upholding these uniform expectations helps create a sense of unity and respect within our school. If you have any questions regarding uniform expectations, please do not hesitate to reach out. Please see our uniform expectations on our website.
Thank you once again for your support in fostering a positive school environment.
If you know another family who may be interested, we’d love for you to extend this invitation.
2026 Kindergarten Enrolment applications are open ONLINE. Please submit your application via our school website, www.sfawdow.catholic.edu.au, and click ENROL NOW. Please do not hesitate to contact the School Office with any questions. Limited vacancies are available in 2025.
Welcome Back - 2025
I would like to wish all of our students a big welcome back to the 2025 school year. Hopefully, you had a joyful and peaceful break with family and friends. It has been wonderful to see the smiling faces of the students and families as they return to school and reconnect with their friends and teachers. Thank you for all of the preparation that you, as parents and carers, put into ensuring your child was set up to have a successful start to the school year.
Meet and Greet - Week 4 and Week 5
In Weeks 4 and 5 this term, you will have the opportunity to meet with your child's class teacher/s. This is an important first step in establishing positive relationships so that we can work in partnership for your child to experience growth in faith, well-being and learning.
These sessions will be open next week (Monday 10 February) and a separate Compass news article will be sent on Monday with details on how to access and create bookings. Please contact your child's class teacher if you need assistance making a booking.
Grade Newsletters will also be shared each term. These will provide an overview of the learning taking place in each class each term, as well as other important information from class teachers.
Friday Assembly - Achievements
At St Francis of Assisi, we celebrate our student achievements in faith, learning and well-being each Friday with a whole school assembly. Sometimes we may have assemblies on other days due to other events on the calendar.
As part of this, we would like to acknowledge any significant achievements that our students complete outside of school. To streamline this process, we have created a form to complete if you would like to share your child's achievements. This will allow you to add relevant details, and photos if you like, to support us in presenting this information accurately.
Please complete this form (link below) if you would like us to recognise your child's achievement at our Friday assembly. This could be a sporting achievement, dancing/singing/performing achievement, martial arts, etc. Anything that your child has achieved outside of school. We would love to share the good news stories of our students.
NOTE: All forms completed by the Monday of the week of the Friday assembly will be included. Any forms received after that will be included in the following assembly.
In addition to our weekly assemblies, we also hold Celebration of Learning Assemblies - 1 per class each year. These assemblies allow each class to present highlights of their learning to the whole school, and we also present Principal and Value awards. Please see below for the 2024 Celebration of Learning timetable.
PLEASE NOTE: Celebration of Learning Assemblies begin at the earlier time of 2:10pm.

IMPORTANT NOTICES AND REMINDERS:
Please note: School supervision does not begin until 8:15 am.
Students should not be at school before this time.
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE .....EVERY LEARNER, EVERY DAY!
- School attendance plays a critical role in enhancing the lives of students in school.
- Every day of attendance adds to a student's academic achievement and success.
- School attendance is compulsory for every school-age student.
Parents can help by promoting the importance of school by:
- ensuring your child attends school every day
- arriving at school punctually (school begins at 8:40 am)
- leading by example ... be organised and ready
We are keen to support parents in developing and consolidating good attendance habits in every student.
Appointments
Please make appointments outside of school hours where possible.
If your child has to leave school early for an appointment, please notify the teacher in writing on the morning of the appointment to avoid disrupting the class and their learning.
Absent Compass Notifications
Please respond to the absent notifications with an explanation for your child's absence.
Punctuality
It is important for children to learn punctuality and arrive at school by
8.30 am.

Homework Policy
We are currently reviewing our Homework Policy. As part of the process, we would greatly value input from you - our parents and carers. You will have the opportunity to discuss this and answer some quick questions with your class teacher at the upcoming meet and greet sessions.
In the meantime, until our homework policy is finalised, our homework expectations will be that every student reads each day.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or feedback on homework.
NRMA Science and Road Safety Program
This year, students will complete an online learning program provided by NRMA around road safety and science. Please see the guide below for ways you can support your children with learning about road safety outside school.
Mr Brett Murphy
Assistant Principal
Pope Francis has proclaimed that 2025 will be a Holy Year of Jubilee, a special year of grace and conversion, involving prayer, pilgrimage and sacramental repentance, ordinarily held every 25 years. The goal of a Jubilee year is to inspire and encourage holiness of life among the faithful and therefore to strengthen the Church’s witness to God’s loving mercy in and for the world.
The spiritual theme for the 2025 Holy Year of Jubilee is ‘Pilgrims of Hope’.
The Jubilee year commenced with the Opening of the Holy Door of Saint Peter’s Basilica on December 24, 2024 and will conclude on Sunday 28th December, 2025.
In choosing the motto ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ for the Jubilee, Pope Francis noted, ‘We must fan the flame of hope that has been given to us and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision.’
As ‘Pilgrims of Hope’, this year is an invitation to renew our hope - a hope which comes from knowing that God loves each one of us.
Prayer
Jesus, on whom the Spirit rests,
guide us on our journey as pilgrims of hope.
Jesus, bringer of Good News,
guide us on our journey as pilgrims of hope.
Jesus, liberator of captives and all who are oppressed,
guide us on our journey as pilgrims of hope.
Jesus, restorer of sight,
guide us on our journey as pilgrims of hope.
Jesus, proclaimer of the year of the Lord’s favour,
guide us on our journey as pilgrims of hope.
Jesus, in whom the Scripture was fulfilled,
guide us on our journey as pilgrims of hope.
Lead us all to be signs of your hope in our world.
Amen.
The following infographic unpacks the symbolism of the Jubilee logo:
Our School Values
For the first half of this term, we are focussing on the Gospel value, ‘Respect’.
At St Francis of Assisi, we value respect because we honour the presence of God in those we meet, believing that everyone is created in the image and likeness of God.
At St Francis of Assisi, we show that we are a community that values respect by:
- using good manners
- considering how our actions affect others
- being an active listener
- responding to people’s needs
- treating all people with kindness
- appreciating the diversity of our community
National Apology to the Stolen Generation - 13 February
Next Thursday is the 17th anniversary of the national apology to the stolen generation which we will observe at school as part of our morning prayer.
Opening School Mass & Commissioning of our Year Six Leaders
Next Friday, 14 February, the whole school will gather with our parish community at the 9am Mass to celebrate our Opening School Mass. This Mass will include a commissioning of our Year Six leaders for 2025. All are most welcome to join us.
Parish Sacramental Programs for 2025
A letter from the parish went home last year regarding the process for enrolling in the Sacramental programs being offered in our parish. This letter was given to children in Years 2 and 5 who have been baptised in the Catholic faith. There are copies of this letter in the foyer of our parish churches. Further enquiries regarding our parish sacramental programs should be directed to the parish office.

This is all about how to safely and effectively use the technology we have available to best enhance student learning. It also includes a comprehensive teaching and learning sequence around the technology and social media policies. This will be supported throughout the year in learning and teaching programs to ensure that our students are digitally aware and cyber-safe citizens.

Safer Internet Day
Tuesday 11 February is Safer Internet Day.
Safer Internet Day is a global day of action that brings together communities, families, schools, and organisations from more than 180 countries to raise awareness about online safety and work toward a safer internet.
In Australia, the eSafety Commissioner leads this important day, and this year, we’re calling on all Australians to help make the internet a safer, more positive place. Supporting Safer Internet Day is just one action you can take. Everyone can take practical steps, including:
-
starting online safety conversations
-
engaging in online safety education
-
practicing respectful behaviour online
-
reporting online abuse
-
sharing online safety resources.
Together, let’s make the internet a safer, more positive place.
At St Francis of Assisi, classes will be exploring ways in which they can be safe online.
Connect safely and with purpose – by keeping apps and devices secure and using social media in positive ways.
Reflect before we act – by taking a moment to consider how what we do and say online may affect others.
Protect ourselves and others by taking action – by telling family, friends or colleagues about eSafety and how we can help.

Fee instalments set up last year will roll over and continue automatically this year. See further details below.
School fees for 2025have now been invoiced and statements have been emailed with annual or firstinstalment payment due on 28 February 2023. You may also view your school fee account in the Compass Parent Portal. Further information available below from the Catholic Education Office.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
▪ The invoicing of school fees and the distribution of school fee statements each month, is now a function carried out by the Catholic Education Office.
▪ Payment of fees, whether as an annual payment or payment by instalments is due on the date/s provided on your school fee statement.
▪ If an amendment is made to your school fee account eg your child changes subjects in a secondary school, etc. you will be emailed a statement which will provide a new schedule of payments and due dates. Please review this schedule to make any changes to your payments that are necessary.
Primary school families will note on their 2024 school fee statements a change in name in relation to the "SEDSO Levy". This levy has now been renamed and will be known as "Primary Building Levy". This is not an additional fee, merely a name change and funds are still used to provide capital grants to schools for new facilities and to meet loan payments for school buildings. We are currently in the process of amending all documentation and websites to reflect this variation.
REMINDERS FOR LATE PAYMENTS
SMS and email reminders are automatically generated by our accounting software based on the number of days a payment is overdue and are distributed by the Catholic Education Office. alleviate some of the administrative work of our schools.

On completion of the request either email it to instalments@dow.catholic.edu.au or submit at your school’s office. Please note it is only necessary to complete this form once during the period of child/children’s enrolment unless you wish to amend your payment frequency.
