Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back for Term 2. I trust you have had a safe and restful break. The students returned to school with many stories about their holiday adventures and were eager to reconnect with their friends and teachers. Thank you to the staff for the work they have put in to prepare for Term 2. We have an exciting term ahead of us and look forward to having our families join us for these significant events.
Scripture Reflection - John 15:9-17
Last Sunday's Gospel from John 15:9-17 emphasises Jesus' command to love each other as He has loved us. He describes His followers as friends, not servants, and highlights that true love involves sacrifice - the ultimate example being His own life.
This message encourages us to cultivate a culture of genuine care and selflessness. It serves as a reminder of the deep connections we should strive to foster among students, staff, and families, mirroring the loving and sacrificial friendship that Jesus exemplifies. Let us use this teaching to reinforce the importance of looking out for one another and being willing to go the extra mile in support of our community. May we all strive to be not just classmates, colleagues, or acquaintances but true friends bound by respect, kindness, and care.
Mother's Day
On Sunday, we celebrate Mother’s Day. While Mother's Day is celebrated on different days in many countries around the world, the central idea of honouring mothers is universal. Mother’s Day is a time to acknowledge the dedication, sacrifice, and love of mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures who shape our lives in profound ways. This morning, our school community gathered for a special Mother’s Day celebration and open classrooms. Thank you to our P&F and parent helpers for preparing the lovely morning tea and organising our Mother’s Day stall. Our school community greatly appreciates all your continued support. We thank our mothers for all you do for our staff, students and families.
Below is a Mother's Day video we shared with the school community during our celebration. Thank you for sending in your photos.
Have a wonderful day on Sunday because you deserve it.
On behalf of the staff, students, school and parish community,
we wish the mothers, grandmothers and mother figures
in our community, a Happy Mother’s Day.

PB4L
This fortnight, our focus has been:
Be Respectful - Following teacher instructions. Students have been reminded that it is important to listen to and follow instructions from teachers in our school. Teachers will give students instructions to help and ensure the students are safe. By listening to teachers, students can show respect for themselves and others.
Our Social and Emotional Learning focus has been effective communication. It is an important part of our learning that we are able to communicate effectively. This means we can tell others clearly what we are thinking, and how we are feeling. Asking questions if you don’t understand is also an important part of communication.
Interest Groups
This term, we are trialling a variety of lunchtime interest groups for the students to have the opportunity to engage in some experiences that are of interest to them. These include choir, boxing/fitness, dance, gymnastics, craft and weaving, drawing and sketching, and Makerspace (Lego and robotics). I thank our staff who have volunteered their time and expertise to provide these opportunities for the students.
Below is one of the students proudly displaying her weaving as a result of attending this interest group.
Playground Equipment - Request for donations
As part of our review of playground areas, we are kindly asking for any donations of pre-loved play equipment from your homes if your children no longer use it.

- Buckets, spades, sand toys for the sand area

Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Survey
Over the next couple of weeks, we are inviting students, teachers and parents to provide feedback on their experience of our school using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process.
We would like to invite you to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student faith, learning and wellbeing at St Francis of Assisi.
The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You are able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device by using the URL below:

Mr Brett Murphy
Acting Assistant Principal
At St Francis of Assisi, we value faith because the ethos of a Catholic school is centered on the person of Jesus and we want others to know Him.
At St Francis of Assisi, we show that we are a community that values faith by:
- welcoming others to share in our faith story
- listening and responding to the scriptures
- being Easter people - people of hope
- being prayerful people
- celebrating the liturgical life of our Church
- honouring our faith traditions and the traditions of others
Celebrating the Month of Mary
The Church has long had a devotion to Mary, Mother of God. In fact, this devotion would be considered a hallmark of our Catholic identity. Whilst we hold Mary in high esteem all year round, traditionally, the Church dedicates the months of May and October to Mary. These months, along with the many other ways we honour her during the liturgical year, remind us to look to her as a model of faith and to reflect on her role in our salvation history. As I have stated before, it is important to note that we don’t worship Mary, but we honour her. The Church honours Mary in many ways – through specific feast days, prayers, devotions, hymns, art and even recognising her as the Mother of the Church. As our spiritual mother, she is an example of faith and commitment to the will of God and therefore is an excellent example of discipleship for the rest of us. A well-known devotion in our Catholic Tradition is the biblically-inspired prayer devotion, the Rosary, which invites us to draw closer to Jesus and Mary by reflecting on key moments in their lives. You may like to reflect on the mysteries of the Rosary at home. If you don’t have time to say a whole Rosary every day, you might like to focus on one set of Mysteries per week; reflecting on one story per day and praying the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be.
If you’d like to know more about the Rosary, Busted Halo has a two minute summary that you might find useful: The Rosary
Farewell, Bishop Emeritus, Peter Ingham
At the end of the school holidays, we learnt of the passing of our previous bishop, Peter Ingham, after a long period of illness. Bishop Peter was installed as the fourth bishop of Wollongong in 2001, serving the diocese for 16 years, before retiring in November 2017. He was 83 years of age and almost 60 years a priest.
When reflecting on the impact Bishop Peter had on the Diocese of Wollongong, our current bishop, Bishop Brian Mascord said:
Bishop Peter was a spiritual father of the Illawarra, Macarthur, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands. We offer him a heartfelt ‘well done, good and faithful servant’ (Matthew 25:23), and we take comfort in the sure hope that we now have another advocate in the presence of our Lord praying for the needs and salvation of the people of God in the Diocese of Wollongong.
A man of God—a man for the people. May his noble soul rest in peace
For details regarding his Solemn Pontifical Mass of Christian Burial, please refer to the ‘Parish News’ section of the newsletter. To watch via livestream, please visit the Diocesan website: https://www.dow.org.au/ or go directly to this website: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgqFiUUu6bU
Three regional hubs have also been organised to enable the faithful to gather together for a livestream of the funeral mass, with Holy Communion being distributed at these venues:
- St John the Evangelist Catholic High School Nowra
- All Saints Catholic Parish Shellharbour
- Campbelltown Catholic Club
To assist in the organisation of adequate seating, if you would like to attend one of the locations, please register your attendance for one of these 3 hubs via the Google form at this website https://dow.sh/EOI-livestream.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
and may perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace. Amen.
Happy Anniversary, Fr Damien
Next Tuesday, 14 May, the whole school will be joining the parish community at the 9.00 am Mass as Fr Damien will be celebrating his 20th anniversary of priestly ordination. As always, parents are most welcome to join us.
Pentecost Sunday
On Sunday 19 May, our parish will be celebrating the Feast of Pentecost - the end of the Easter season and the birthday of the Church. At Pentecost, we recall the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem: a critical event that marked the beginning of the Church, as it was the moment when the disciples gained clarity of purpose and felt empowered by the gift of the Holy Spirit to continue the mission Jesus had left them when he ascended to heaven: to be his witnesses throughout the world. The same Holy Spirit that transformed the apostles is still with us today. Just as Jesus instructed his disciples to go out and make his love known throughout the world, so too are we sent out with the same mission. Through Baptism, we have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us with the task of being disciples of Jesus. The challenge after Baptism is for us to continue to nurture our faith and attune our hearts to how the Holy Spirit is calling us to live in relationship with others.
Pentecost is one of the highlights of our parish’s year due to the cultural diversity of our parishioners. Following the 10:30 am Mass at St Francis of Assisi church, the community gathers for a multicultural lunch and opportunities to win prizes. You are welcome to attend in national dress. If you are able to, please bring a plate of food to share.
This year, this will be a dual celebration as it will be at our Pentecost celebration that the parish community will celebrate Fr Damien’s 20th anniversary as well
Laudato Si’ Week
Laudato Si' Week is a weeklong event marking the anniversary of Pope Francis' publication of Laudato Si’, an encyclical on the care of creation. This year’s theme is "Seeds of Hope" and it will be celebrated from 19th - 26th May.
Laudato Si’ Week invites the global church to contemplate and nurture seeds of hope for our “suffering planet” (LD 2). The theme is inspired by the symbol for the Season of Creation 2024, “first fruits.”

WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY 10 MAY 2024 - 8.20AM
Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking! Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine.
You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:
• Walking with them the whole way to school
• If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.
After your child/ren walk to school, they will receive a sticker. Teachers will also gather at the school gate at 8.20 am for a walk around the block. You are more thank welcome to join us.
Regular exercise, like walking with your child helps them and you, beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic. Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 10 May 2024!

School photo day was held last week. Online ordering will be closing soon. If you have not ordered your child/ren's 2024 school photos, this is available following the information below.

Dear Parents,
We're excited to share our focus on nurturing a love of reading among our St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School students. Our annual improvement plan (AIP) is dedicated to enhancing reading skills and creating a culture where reading is cherished. We're encouraging all students to participate in the Premier's Reading Challenge to further this goal. This challenge invites students to set reading goals and explore a variety of books, fostering a lifelong love for reading.
All Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students will be registered and books recorded at school- parents do not need to do anything. Students in Years 3-6 will need to accept the invitation via events on Compass. Let's inspire our students to embrace the joy of reading and participate in the Premier's Reading Challenge.
Thank you for your support.

Primary school families will note on their 2024 school fee statements a change in name in relation to the "SEDSO Levy". This levy has now been renamed and will be known as "Primary Building Levy". We are currently in the process of amending all documentation and websites to reflect this variation.
REMINDERS FOR LATE PAYMENTS
