Dear Parents and Carers,
As we come to the end of Term 3, I would like to take the opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to our staff, students and families for your wonderful support of the programmes and opportunities offered to the students throughout this term. It certainly has been a busy one.
When I look back over our calendar for the term, we have had so many highlights in faith, learning and wellbeing. The opportunity for our parents and families to be back in the school engaging with their children has been something to celebrate. As a whole school community, the Year 5 and 6 Camp, Grandparents Day, Year 6 Mass with the Bishop and Activate, Book Fair and Book Parade, Masses and Liturgies, K, 1 and 2 Excursions, Father’s Day, R U OK? Day, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Catholic Mission Launch, St Francis of Assisi Feast Day Celebrations, and celebration of Learning Assemblies. These are just some of the wonderful reflections of how we have come together as one community.
Congratulations to our students who have represented the school in so many ways at the South Coast and Diocesan Carnivals, Girls Rugby League Competition, Paul Kelly Cup, NSW Touch Gala Day and Soccer Gala Day with St Patrick’s Port Kembla.
I would like to acknowledge and thank our dedicated staff. Thank you for all you do for our students and their families; as mentioned, we have had some very significant events in our school this term. It takes a team effort from staff, parents and students for these events to be successful. Great team effort, everyone!
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently announced that Thursday 22 September 2022, will be a public holiday for the National Day of Mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. At St Francis of Assisi, we join with our worldwide community in appreciation of the remarkable life and service of Queen Elizabeth II, who throughout her 70-year reign was steadfast in her faith, in her prayers and worship. She spoke openly and often of her devotion to God and to the Christian message of respect and the value of people, of all faiths and none. May she rest in peace.
I hope everyone has a chance to relax a little during these holidays. If you are travelling, please take care on the road. I look forward to seeing you all again for our last term. Enjoy the break!
Students return to school on Monday 10 October 2022, in their summer uniform.

School Traffic Rules
We have had a few concerns from residents in the streets around our school about parents blocking driveways or making unsafe u-turns during school pick-up/drop-off. Please remember there are road rules that are enforceable by law and school rules that we put in place to ensure the safety of our students during drop-off and pick-up times.
Road Rules enforceable by law include:-
• No u-turns across double lines or in school zones.
• No parking in school zones in "No parking' times.
• No going over 40 km in school zones.
• Not using mobile phones when driving.
Rules that we put in place as a school to ensure student safety include:
• Using the Pedestrian Crossing at all times.
• Holding hands with children (especially younger children) when crossing the road.
• Ensure children only enter or leave the car on the passenger side to avoid them
standing or exiting on the road.
• Parent/s remain in cars at all times when using "car pick line."
Please do not block the driveway while waiting in the pickup line at the back of the school on Bruce Road, as this is a one-way lane and vehicles need to exit.
Return in summer uniform on Monday 10 October
Students will return in Term 4 wearing their summer school uniform. Please note students' hair, uniform, and appearance should be in such a condition so as to invite only positive comments. Hair cuts must be neat and tidy. Long hair is to be tied back. Extreme hair cuts and coloured hair are not permitted. The emphasis is on evenly cut hair. Please ensure students return to school next term following all school uniform expectations. Thank you.
2023 - Transition to School through Play and Orientation - Term 4
In Term 4, we will have the pleasure of welcoming our 2023 Kindergarten students to our school for their Transition to School Playgroup sessions. These sessions will begin on Thursday 13 October at 1.30 pm. Below are the Playgroup Transition to school dates and times. The sessions will be approximately 1 hour starting at 1.30 pm on alternate Mondays and Thursdays for 8 weeks. We ask that a parent or carer attends the playgroup sessions with your child. Upon completion of the Playgroup program, a Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Monday 5 December at 9.30 am. At this meeting, the children will go to their Kindergarten Classroom, and parents will attend an information session in the school hall. We are looking forward to meeting our Kindergarten students and their families.

Catholic Mission Launch
Last week, Mrs Davidson, Lara and Joseph travelled to Ruse to attend the launch of World Mission Month with Bishop Brian and representatives from schools from all over our diocese. Here’s what Lara and Joseph had to say about their experience.
It was really nice to be a part of such a reverent liturgy. The hymns were beautiful, and it was great seeing all the different schools and their staff gathered in one place. At the launch, there was a guest speaker from Ethiopia named Dorothy, and she explained that where she came from, people didn’t have a lot of money or food.
During the launch, we came to realise that some people in the world aren’t as fortunate as we are and that receiving even one piece of food means so much more to people living in Ethiopia than it does to us. It made us realise how lucky we are, and it opened our eyes to what is really going on out in the world.
We learnt about Catholic Mission’s major fundraising initiative, Socktober. To take part in Socktober, people all over Australia make a soccer ball out of socks and plastic - which is what people living in poor countries like Ethiopia do - and they use these homemade soccer balls to play against a goalkeeper and try to kick some goals. For people living in poverty, playing games and spending time with family and friends is a way to have fun, and they value every single second they have together. We think getting involved in Socktober next term is a great idea for our school. We’ll be able to experience what it’s like for people living in poorer parts of the world, we’ll be able to have fun kicking goals, and the money we raise will go towards helping people living in Ethiopia.

Sacramental Program Update
Thank you to those families who have continued to bring their children to Mass outside of the Sacramental preparation program. This commitment to participating in our Eucharistic celebrations provides a powerful witness to the importance of God in the life of your family.
In light of our revised Mass times, the numbers that had enrolled in the Reconciliation and First Communion programs back in July and the need to ensure that our parish Masses can still accommodate the regular parishioners not involved in a sacramental program, the decision has been made to celebrate First Holy Communion over 2 weekends. Please be advised of the following arrangements regarding when First Holy Communion will be celebrated in our parish churches:
- Saturday 12 November - St Mary of the Rosary Church in Berkeley @ 4 pm.
- Sunday 13 November - St Francis of Assisi Church in Warrawong @ 10:30 am.
- Saturday 19 November - St Mary of the Rosary Church in Berkeley @ 4 pm.
- Sunday 20 November - St Francis of Assisi Church in Warrawong @ 10:30 am.
For those enrolled in this year’s First Holy Communion program, please note that the information night is scheduled for Tuesday 11 October in St Francis of Assisi Church at Warrawong, commencing at 7 pm. Families will be required to indicate which ceremony they will be attending at the information night.
Christmas Story Art Competition and Exhibition
Each year, students from Years 5 and 6 are invited to participate in the Christmas Story Art Competition and Exhibition, which is an initiative of the Catholic Education Offices in Wollongong and Sydney. This initiative is designed to celebrate and explore children’s creative and artistic ability in illustrating the Christmas story and has the twofold benefit of being a wonderful way to share the Catholic faith with the wider community.
This year, our school submitted three artworks from Year 5 and three from Year 6. Congratulations, Tahlia, Brock and Manee. Here are our Year 5 entries:

Congratulations, Savannah, Eva and Faith. Here are our Year 6 entries:
A team of judges had the difficult task of choosing only 40 artworks out of all of the submissions from across the diocese (close to 180!) and we were informed on Tuesday afternoon that Savannah’s artwork was chosen to be displayed at the Wollongong City Art Gallery for the Christmas Story Art Exhibition. The chosen artworks were works that were judged to best respond to the criteria and were exemplary of Stage 3 reflective writing and artistic skills.
All Paths Lead to Him
by Savannah Gouveia
My artwork drew inspiration from the scripture Matthew 2:9-12, The Visit of the Magi. This scripture is about the kings following The Star of Bethlehem until they reached its stopping point, above where Jesus had been born.
I started with the star because when I think about Christmas, I think about the placing of the star on top of my Christmas tree. This process is special to my family. From there, I made a connection with the story of the Magi.
The northern and southern points of the star are joined by a light blue swirl, the light blue symbolising the peaceful journey to Jesus, the trust they placed in the instructions of Herod. However, when the Magi left Jesus, they needed to take another path, represented by the darker blue swirl. The dark blue is a serious colour that represents authority and intelligence. The threat to Jesus was serious, and their actions were inspired by God’s message of intelligence.
Finally, the background is a blend of colours that fill me with love and warmth, while the white borders depict the various paths we must journey on throughout our lives, surrounded by the love and hope of reaching Jesus one day.
Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi
On Friday 23 September, we will be celebrating the feast of our patron saint, St Francis of Assisi. St Francis’ feast day is the 4 October, which is during the holidays.
Saint Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) is probably the most popular Christian saint. His radiant spirit is a beacon for those seeking a life of meaning and service. St Francis was a friend to man and beast, an admirer of the sun and of nature, and a peacemaker in every sense of the word. He was not merely at peace with his fellow man -- he was at peace with all living things.
Simply put, St Francis was a heartfelt ally to everything and everyone around him. He was their kindred spirit. St Francis did not call judgment on mankind for their use of the environment, be it animals for food, trees for shelter, etc. Instead, he simply urged humankind to show respect, humility, and love towards their fellow inhabitants of the earth and surroundings, and likewise, he expected the same from other creation. He felt that by embracing and rejoicing in the wonders around them, humankind would naturally then be drawn to perform acts out of love and respect rather than anger and domination.
St Francis felt compelled to reach out to the voiceless, the rejected, and the needy. Concern for the poor is a central theme in the life of St Francis of Assisi. He is a saint for our time because he stands in a tradition of powerful demands for social justice. St Francis of Assisi, composed a simple rule for his followers, the "friars", which was "To follow the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and to walk in his footsteps.” A great message for all of us.

Nominations are now open for these trials. Students are required to be experienced players and extremely talented at their chosen sport. These trials are not gala days or school-based carnivals. They have not been designed for students “to come and try or for the experience”, they are for students who are elite at their sport and expect to make it to the next level.
Base criteria need to be met to attend these trials. Below is the background information you should specify in your nomination:
- years played
- representative experience and teams (preferred not essential)
- any outstanding achievements in the sport
All student nominations are sent to trial conveners for approval. Students who have nominated for a sport will then be informed if they have been successful or unsuccessful to attend the Wollongong trials. Successful students will receive a letter from the school detailing the trial, times, gear requirements etc.
Please complete a separate form for any additional sports you wish to nominate for.

This September, an initiative by the Black Dog Institute encouraged people to shape and grow mullets to raise funds for crucial mental health research.
Congratulations to Thomas W (5 Blue) for identifying the need to focus on our mental health and well-being. Thank you, Thomas, for your initiative and the way in which you approached Mrs Davidson for an exemption to the uniform policy while raising funds for this cause. So far Thomas has raised $345. Well done, Tom!
Term 4 Week 1

Please make appointments outside school hours, where possible. If your child needs to be collected early for an appointment, a note explaining this is required to be given to the class teacher by the student on the morning of the appointment. As a matter of courtesy, this communication assists in the organising of the day for the class and teacher. Telephone messages during class time interrupt class learning and we avoid this unless urgent. This explanation is documented in your child's attendance records.
All students are required to attend school unless they are unwell. Students should arrive by 8.30 am and finish at 3.00 pm. Daily attendance recording in the Compass Parent Portal notifies parents of their child being absent. Parents are required to record their explanation in Compass by completing the link they receive via text or by logging into the Compass parent portal.
All absences including early leave and late arrival must be reported by parents with an explanation and or a medical certificate if required.
Parents are required to write a note to the teacher if their child has to be collected early for an appointment.
The Year 7, 2023 Orientation days will be held next term. Please contact the relevant high school to confirm and for further details.
