Dear Parents and Carers
Last Wednesday, we came together to mark the commencement of the season of Lent. Lent is a time of preparation for Easter when we relive the mystery of the Risen Christ and the light of hope it sheds on our whole existence.
When we speak to the students about Lent, we discuss the three ways we can turn our attention to God in our lives – through prayer, through 'fasting' or living in a way that is 'simple' and through giving to those in need.
We will ask the students to consider their involvement in this time of Lent. As parents, teachers, family and friends, we face the same considerations. Are there ways we can dedicate ourselves to this Lenten opportunity? Something we may find challenging is to reach out to those we sometimes lose sight of and to be of service to others. It can mean a great deal when we stop for a few minutes to chat with someone; simply sharing your time is a great act of service. Finally, lent is our opportunity to show the God in us, to be models of grace and allow others to feel God's embrace through our actions. During this Lenten season, how will you show God in you?
As we continue to support, work and be with each other, let us remember that we are praying with each other.
Jesus, may we be encouraged this Lent to reflect on the difficulties You had in Your life. Give us the same courage to face the challenges that daily enter our lives.
Lead us to the joy of resurrection. Amen."

Teacher Professional Development and Leave
Like professionals in other fields, all teachers are required to keep up to date with current thinking on best practices and new developments in areas such as curriculum and technology. From time to time, teachers are required to attend professional development opportunities to learn about changes to the curriculum, new teaching and learning methods, and other ways of integrating technology.
These sessions sometimes occur during the day, after school, or during school holidays.
At times, staff may need to take long service, maternity, family, sick, and bereavement leave. As a result, there will be times when your child's teacher is absent from the classroom. The teacher's program and lesson day plans are taught on these days. Teachers will collaborate and communicate with the casual teacher so that teaching and learning continue and routines are maintained. At all times, student needs and school timetables are considered. We thank you for your support.

Schools Clean Up Day
Since 1992, schools across Australia have made a real difference to their environment and local communities through participating in a Schools Clean Up. Over 2,000 preschools and primary schools participated in the 2021 Schools Clean Up Day, and many more have signed up for an Everyday Clean Up since then. These sites make an immense contribution to the rubbish removed by volunteers - young and old!
We will participate in Schools Clean Up Day tomorrow, Friday 3 March 2023. This is a fun and engaging way to teach young Australians about the responsible disposal of rubbish, resource recovery, and the repercussions of rubbish dumped irresponsibly in the local environment. Students are asked to bring in a pair of gloves. All students will be closely supervised as they participate in this important environmental community event.
PB4L News
Our whole school focus for the next two weeks will be on our toilets. The expectations listed below will be shared and practised in each class. Teachers on duty will be reinforcing these expectations by acknowledging students who are demonstrating safe, responsible, and respectful behaviours in this area.
High School Visits
Over the last couple of weeks, Years 5 and 6 have been visited by the local Catholic High Schools in our area. The students have brought home information about Open Day and information sessions, as well as how to enrol. Please contact these schools for more information. (see advertisements at the back of the newsletter)
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point-in-time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills. Each year students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar, and punctuation), and numeracy.
NAPLAN has now moved to Term 1 and will take place on the following dates:
Wednesday 15 March | Writing |
Thursday 16 March | Reading |
Wednesday 22 March | Conventions of Language |
Thursday 23 March | Numeracy |
The reason for the change of date to March is to enable results to be returned to schools earlier in the year, which will support teachers in addressing the learning needs of their students and plan accordingly.
NAPLAN tests are just one part of our school learning assessment program, and questions are primarily based on knowledge, understanding, and skills gained from the prior year of schooling.
In preparation for NAPLAN 2023, our school will undertake activities to help students to become familiar with the format and functionality of the online tests. These activities are not an assessment of student ability and will not be marked.
Students and parents can access the public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) to familiarise themselves with NAPLAN and the types of questions and tools available. Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not required nor recommended.
If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact your child’s teacher.
PAT Testing
ACER’s Progressive Achievement approach is used in thousands of schools in Australia and around the world. The approach focuses on assessing and monitoring student growth over time and is underpinned by an understanding that students of the same age and in the same year of school can be at very different points in their learning and development.
Why do schools use PAT tests?
- They provide a measure of student achievement in each learning area
- PAT Adaptive uses a sophisticated computer adaptive assessment model to accurately target students’ abilities and to provide richer and more accurate diagnostic information about students’ achievements and needs.
- Entry levels are automatically assigned according to students’ estimated ability, and their individualised test pathway is constructed as they progress through a series of ‘test lets’ – small blocks of test items.
- There is a common achievement scale for all tests within a learning area (PAT scale scores allow teachers to compare achievement on the tests within each learning area regardless of year level and the specific test completed and to monitor progress over time)
- They are mapped to the Australian Curriculum.
- They provide overall descriptions of the types of skills mastered and those still to be developed based on test performance.
- Individual and group reports have automatically calculated scores and sorting functions that allow comparison of scores across students, strands, etc.
- They can be used to inform teaching and learning and to assist in planning effective and targeted learning programs.
Students in Years 2-6 have been engaged in PAT Reading and PAT Mathematics Adaptive tests during the last two weeks. The results will now be analysed and used to guide the planning of learning activities.

Assistant Principal
Last weekend, a number of children from our school attended either the Commitment Mass at Berkeley on Saturday night or Warrawong on Sunday to express their desire to be involved in the Sacrament of Penance program this year. They received their stoles and a copy of some of the prayers from our Catholic Tradition and chose someone from our parish community to be their prayer sponsor during their time of preparation. The workshops for this program are now underway and will continue for the next four weeks.

With the support of our partner Caritas Nepal, Laxmi joined a child's club at her school where she was encouraged to resume her education. Through the child’s club, Laxmi developed the skills and confidence to become a leader, advocating for clean water taps at her school.
Laxmi is now excelling in her studies and working towards her dream of becoming a civil engineer. She continues to be involved in the child's club, serving as an advisor and mentoring the next generation of young leaders at her old school.

Second Week of Lent
Next week through Project Compassion we learn about Tereesa, a Gamilaroi woman from Western Sydney who struggled with homelessness while raising her four children. At just 16 years old, she had to leave school after falling pregnant with her first child. A single mother struggling with homelessness, Tereesa’s only concern was finding stability for her children.
Seeking a better future for her family, Tereesa joined Baabayn Aboriginal
Corporation’s Young Mums and Bubs Group, supported by Caritas Australia. Baabayn helped Tereesa access housing and psychological support. Through Baabayn, Tereesa was also able to hear stories from Indigenous Elders and reconnect with her culture.
Today, Tereesa is studying for a certificate in Community Services so that she can strengthen her skills and give back to her community. Tereesa now works at Baabayn, providing support to young mothers and mentoring the next generation of young people.

One of the aspects of the assessment and instruction framework is building students' capacity to peer and self-assess using the success criteria. Today in Mathematics, Year 4, enjoyed the opportunity to take an active role in learning from each other by listening, analysing and problem-solving. Not only did they help each other with the task, but they deeply reflected on their own work. Great work, Year 4!
Working Bee - Saturday 04 March
Dear Parents and Carers,
Recently, we purchased some playground equipment for our students to enjoy in the grass playground. This includes swing sets, climbing equipment, and much more.
We are requesting anyone who is able to assist us in building the equipment - we know we have some flat pack master builders in our community - to please give some time this Saturday 04 March from 10am in the Grass Playground. Any time you are able to give will be greatly appreciated. If you aren't the handy type of person, your assistance would still be appreciated in supporting other roles. Children are most welcome to join us, and we will need some to be the first ones to test the equipment out!
If you have any of the following tools available, please bring them with you:
- Rubber mallets
- Wrench
- Tape Measure
We will be providing a BBQ lunch on the day for anyone who is able to join us to say thank you. Please complete the brief form to indicate attendance for catering purposes.
We look forward to seeing you there and thank you in advance for your support.
All Parents & Friends positions will be made vacant and an election will be held for new committee members for the 2023 Parents & Friends Committee. The AGM has been scheduled to be held on Thursday 16 March from 3.30-4.30. Please see below for further information. All parents are welcome and hope to see you there.

Dear Parents
School fee accounts are invoiced per family annually including Tuition and SEDSO fees. This fee of $2968 per annum is only charged once per family (even if there are one or five children in the family). This is not charged per student and equates to only $57 per week per family. This family fee covers the education provided to the students including expenses for teaching staff, equipment, school operations, facilities, curriculum resources, materials, building, and capital maintenance costs of school facilities.
Student Resource fees are for opportunities for the students and are expenses the school incurs to provide including school books, classroom equipment, arts and crafts, sports equipment, bus transport to carnivals, iPad programs, school camps, school excursions, incursions, and activities. This cost varies between grades and is an opportunity for the students. Prior to the new digital finance system, these student activity expenses were paid by cash with a permission note throughout various times of the year. As the system is now cashless these are added to the fee account and there are no longer additional expenses throughout the year. This system supports families to budget in advance. Please do not hesitate to contact the School Office if you have any questions or if we can be of any assistance.
School Fee Payments
Fee Statements have been emailed. Please log in to your Parent Compass Portal to view your school fee account by clicking the Payments Centre green box above "My News". Payments can be paid online by clicking "School Fees Action Required". Full payment is due by 28 February unless the below instalment form has been submitted and you have set up these payments on your Compass portal or Bpay using the details on the Fee Statement emailed. Fee instalments set up last year will roll over and continue automatically this year. See further details below.
▪ The invoicing of school fees and the distribution of school fee statements each month, is now a function carried out by the Catholic Education Office.
▪ Payment of fees, whether as an annual payment or payment by instalments is due on the date/s provided on your school fee statement.
▪ If an amendment is made to your school fee account eg your child changes subjects in a secondary school, etc. you will be emailed a statement which will provide a new schedule of payments and due dates. Please review this schedule to make any changes to your payments that are necessary.
Reminders for Late Payments
SMS and email reminders are automatically generated by our accounting software based on the number of days a payment is overdue and are distributed by the Catholic Education Office. For those families that may have difficulty in paying their school fees, these reminders may cause some distress. This is not our intention. Our intention is to support the collection of school fee accounts centrally and in so doing,
alleviate some of the administrative work of our schools.
School Fee Account Enquiries
Please note, despite the centralisation of various functions, your school/s will always be your point of contact for matters pertaining to fees. If you wish to discuss your school fee account, please contact your school office. The role of the Catholic Education Office is to action centralised tasks on behalf of schools.
If you wish to Pay by Instalments
Many families have already elected to pay their school fees by instalments. If you wish to avail yourself of this option please complete a Request to Pay by Instalment Form which is available on your school’s website or at your school’s office. On completion of the request either email it to instalments@dow.catholic.edu.au or submit at your school’s office. Following receipt of the request, instalments will be generated on your account and a schedule of payments and due dates will be provided on your next school fee statement. Please note it is only necessary to complete this form once during the period of child/children’s enrolment unless you wish to amend your payment frequency.
Difficulty with Payment
If you are experiencing financial difficulty, we encourage you to contact the school in which your child/children are enrolled to discuss an arrangement that will assist you meet your commitments. This may include the completion of a Diocesan Application for Fee Concession which is available from the administration office of each school. Be reassured that your situation will be treated with strict confidentiality and respect for your circumstances. If you wish to submit an application, please do so at your child’s school. Please note, if you have children in more than one school, it will only be necessary to submit one application. For those families that received a Fee Concession in 2022, you will receive an email prior to your annual review date attaching a further Application for Fee Concession. You may also initiate an earlier review if you wish to do so by contacting your school office. For further information regarding school fees, please access the Diocesan School Fee Management
Policy and Frequently Asked Questions which is available on your school’s website.
When families are taking holidays during the school term for 10 days or more, an Application for Leave must be completed, with notice, and submitted at the School Office. This application is required to be approved by the School Principal prior to the leave commencing and a Certificate of Extended Leave will be issued for the parents to have with them during their travels.
