Dear Parents and Carers
May is a very special month for the Church as we remember Mary, the Mother of Jesus and the Mother of us all. A full month is given over to Mary, and during this month we are asked to think about Mary, say special prayers to her, sing hymns to Mary to tell her how much we love her and ask her to help us stay close to her son Jesus and to try to live as Jesus shows us. Mary, Jesus’ mother, was a woman admired for her bravery and loved for her devotion to God. God chose Mary for what could arguably be the most important job in history—bringing our Saviour Jesus Christ into the world. There is so much we can learn from Mary’s walk of obedience. There’s something very special about a mother’s love, and in this month of May, we especially remember the love of Mary, mother of God and our mother too.
We hope you all enjoyed your special day on Sunday!
Mrs Vicky Davidson
PRINCIPAL
Acting Assistant Principal and Year 5
As previously communicated, Mr Rodney Green is taking personal leave during Term 2. After a recruitment process, Mr Brett Murphy has been appointed as Acting Assistant Principal in Mr Green's absence. On behalf of the school and parish community, I would like to congratulate Mr Murphy on this appointment. For the remainder of Term 2, Mrs Melanie Pilon will be working three days a week with Year 5. We wish Mr Murphy and Mrs Pilon all the best in these roles.
Winter School Uniform - Changeover
Thank you to our parents and carers for transitioning the students into winter uniforms. All students should now be wearing their winter uniform. The way we present ourselves demonstrates respect for ourselves and our school as a united community. Please let your class teacher know if you have questions about uniforms.
At St Francis of Assisi, we support students to be sun smart. In doing so, we encourage students to consistently wear their hats when outdoors, from the time they enter the school gate each morning until they are dismissed each afternoon. Thank you for supporting your children to wear their uniforms correctly and with pride.
2024 Kindergarten Enrolment Interviews
Our Kindergarten enrolment interviews for 2024 have continued this week. This enrolment period is an exciting time for these children, their families and our school community. We ask that you continue to keep them in your prayers.
If you have a sibling commencing school in 2024 but have not completed an application form, please do so as soon as possible. We are still accepting enrolment applications; please contact the office. Enrolment packs are available from the school office or our website.
Parking around the school
Thank you to our families who are parking correctly in the streets around the school and for using the car pick-up safely. We still have a number of vehicles blocking driveways and double parking in no-stopping zones on Bruce Road. Please be mindful of our road rules to keep the local residents and our school community safe.
Tell Them From Me Survey
A sincere thank you to all parents who have been able to share their feedback through the Tell Them From Me survey. Your voice and that of your children and their teachers will help guide our school's strategic improvement plan. I look forward to sharing the survey analysis with you when the results are released. Please see the link on Compass or Seesaw to access the survey. From the Acting Assistant Principal

Semester One Reports for Years 1-6 will be released via Compass on Friday 23 June (Week 9). Instructions on how to access your child's report on Compass will be shared in the Week 6 newsletter.
In conjunction with Semester One reports, we will be holding 3-way conferences with students, teachers and parents/carers, to discuss their learning to date.
These will occur between Weeks 8 - 10 of this term. Bookings will be made through the Compass portal. Details of how to create a booking will be sent out in the Week 6 newsletter.
Your child is encouraged to attend these meetings with you to have an input into their learning so far and be a part of planning learning goals for Semester Two.
St Francis of Assisi will participate in the ICAS competition this year. These competitions will be available to Year 3-6 students.
What is ICAS? ICAS is an online academic competition designed to assess students' higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee, and Digital Technologies.
Each assessment celebrates students' accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student who participates will receive a printed certificate and an online report. Top performers will be eligible for medals.
Please note these competitions are completely optional and have a cost associated with them. Please see the attached information sheet and contact Mr Murphy if you have any questions. The closing date to order these assessments is Monday 31 July 2023. The tests will be held at school during August, and further information will be provided to students and families who have opted to take part.
Surf Sense Water Safety Education Program

During this weekend’s Masses, the candidates will be presenting their ‘Candidate for Confirmation’ posters which will be displayed at St Francis of Assisi Church, Warrawong as this is where they will be confirmed in June.
On Pentecost Sunday, the following weekend, they will be presenting their acrostic poems on Pentecost.
Ascension Sunday
This weekend, our Church will celebrate the Ascension of our Lord into Heaven, which is commemorated 40 days after Jesus’ resurrection (Easter). We state our belief in the Ascension in both creeds used at Mass when we say, ‘He ascended into heaven’. Whilst the 40-day mark would technically be on a Thursday, the celebration of the Ascension is often observed on the seventh Sunday of Easter.
Celebrate Laudato Si' Week ~ 21 - 28 May
Next week is Laudato Si’ Week. Laudato Si' Week is a weeklong event marking the anniversary of Pope Francis' landmark encyclical on the care of creation. This year we are celebrating the eighth anniversary with the theme “Hope for the Earth. Hope for Humanity”.
By Pope Francis
Powerful God,
You hold us and everything you have made in your loving care.
You are in the whole universe and in every tiny creature.
Pour out on us, God, the power of your love
and teach us to care for life and for beauty.
Fill us with peace so that we do not harm others,
but love them all like sisters and brothers.
God, we know that people who are poor are very special to you
and you want us to love them, too, so they are not forgotten.
We ask you to change us so that we protect your world, not destroy it.
Change the hearts of people who only care about themselves and money
instead of caring about people and the earth.
Show us how even small things matter.
Help us see that we are all connected to each other and to the earth.
We thank you, God, for being with us each day.
Fill us up with wonder and light
and help us to bring peace to our beautiful world. Amen
Our Lady Help of Christians
Next Wednesday, 24 May, our school will be attending the 9am parish Mass for the Solemnity of Our Lady Help of Christians.
The feast day of Mary Help of Christians has been celebrated in Australia since 1844 but the history to this day dates back to the start of the 1800s. The early Church in Australia was mostly priestless and it was largely the Rosary that kept the faith alive. Catholic Australia remained faithful to Mary and was the first nation to choose her, under the title of Help of Christians, as Principal Patron.
In the Opening Prayer for Our Lady Help of Christians, the Church prays that through Our Lady’s intercession, God will “grant wisdom to our leaders and integrity to our citizens” so that “under her protection, Australia may be granted harmony, justice and peace”.

National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week
National Sorry Day ~ 26 May & Reconciliation Week ~ 27 May - 03 June
Each year our country celebrates National Reconciliation Week from 27 May to 3 June. It is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2023 is ‘Be a Voice for Generations’. It aims to encourage all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise.
Reconciliation Week follows National Sorry Day which is celebrated on the 26th May. National Sorry Day is a day to pause and remember the Stolen Generations of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples.
We will highlight National Sorry Day during morning prayer on 26 May and Reconciliation Week before assembly on 02 June.
Pentecost Sunday
On Sunday 28 May, our parish will be celebrating the Feast of Pentecost - the end of the Easter season and the birthday of the Church. Pentecost Sunday is celebrated 50 days after the resurrection and marks the end of the Easter Season.
At Pentecost, we recall the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem: a critical event that marked the beginning of the Church, as it was the moment when the disciples gained clarity of purpose and felt empowered by the gift of the Holy Spirit to continue the mission Jesus had left them when he ascended to heaven: to be his witnesses throughout the world.
The same Holy Spirit that transformed the apostles is still with us today. Just as Jesus instructed his disciples to go out and make his love known throughout the world, so too are we sent out with the same mission. Through Baptism, we have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us with the task of being disciples of Jesus. The challenge after Baptism is for us to continue to nurture our faith and attune our hearts to how the Holy Spirit is calling us to live in relationship with others.
As we prepare to celebrate the birthday of the Church, let us pray that we may all be open to the whisperings of the Holy Spirit and reflect on how we are being called to help bring the love and peace of Jesus to our homes, our school, our community and our world.
As with all parish Masses, you are warmly invited to join us. After Mass, the celebrations will continue with a multicultural meal and opportunities to win prizes. If you intend to stay for lunch, please bring along a plate of food to share. If you have traditional costumes, please feel most welcome to wear these as well.
The Feast of the Visitation
Our Church celebrates the feast of the Visitation each year on the 31 May. As our Sisters are Daughters of Our Lady of the Visitation, this is their feast day, too. This year’s feast day will also coincide with the opening of a Holy Year to mark the Centenary of their Congregation in Vietnam.
In honour of such an anniversary, on Wednesday, 31 May, Bishop Brian Mascord will celebrate Mass at St Francis of Assisi church, along with Fr Damien and other priests, at 6 pm. All are warmly invited to attend this Mass to help our Sisters celebrate this special occasion.

FRIDAY 19 MAY at 8.20 am
You are encouraged to walk to school on this day or park a distance from school and walk the remainder of the way. For those who are unable to do this, Mrs Briscoe and other staff will lead any students on a local walk around the block at 8:20 am on Friday. All students and families are invited and welcome to join this walk.
World Education Support Personnel Day
On Tuesday, our school community celebrated World Education Support Personnel Day. This was an opportunity to thank our amazing School Support Officers who work in our administration and classrooms. We thank them for all they do for the teachers, students and families at St Francis of Assisi. The teachers prepared a special morning tea and small gift on behalf of the school community as a token of our appreciation. We hope they enjoyed their special day, and if you see any of our wonderful School Support Officers around the school, please feel free to give them a big thanks for all they do.

Year Six Art Gallery
This term Year 6 students have been working on the art of sketching, using the half photo half drawing self-portrait technique. Students began with a half photo of an ANZAC soldier and completed the image using detailed sketching. Using this same technique, the next task was to complete a self-portrait. This proved a greater challenge as the need for accurate detail became more obvious as the subject matter was personal. The culmination of the use of this technique came last week when they created a portrait of their mother as a gift for Mother’s Day. As the images below show, all students improved their sketching techniques, and some even astounded teachers and classmates. It was amazing to see the amount of realistic detail that came from using a lead pencil. We hope that this process sets the students up for success when they begin the Christmas Story Art Competition in Term 3.
Last Friday we celebrated our beautiful mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures. This year we were able to welcome everyone into our classrooms for Mother's Day celebrations with the commissioning of our new lift during the school holidays. Together we enjoyed a Mother's Day Liturgy, Morning Tea, a visit to the classrooms, and recess with the students. We hope you had a lovely day on Sunday.
Mothers Day Stall
The excitement was infectious at our Mother's Day stall last Thursday. The students thoroughly enjoyed shopping for their mothers, grandmothers, and the mother figures in their lives. A special thank you to all our helpers who, without them, we could not have run such a fantastic stall. We hope all our mothers, grandmothers and mother figures loved the gifts the children gave them on Mother's Day. Thank you to our parent volunteers who made this possible for our students. Thank you.

National Simultaneous Storytime 2023
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centers, family homes, bookshops, and many other places around the country. Now in its 23rd successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
2023's chosen book is The Speedy Sloth by Rebecca Young and Heath McKenzie; a story about a sloth that loves to run around FAST! He goes on an adventure in the rainforest, challenging other animals to a race. He learns some important lessons along the way.
This year NSS takes place on Wednesday 24 May 2023 at 11:00 am and our school will be participating.
The 5 symptoms that mean your child should stay home from school...
Over the past two weeks, we have had a number of staff and students quite unwell.
It is a decision every parent faces regularly, whether or not to keep a sick child home from school.
Here are symptoms that mean your child should stay home:
1. Fever - this is a sign of infection and while giving them medicine might bring the fever down, it won't stop them from being contagious.
2. Vomiting or diarrhea - it is unfair all around - to the child and the school - to send a child with vomiting or diarrhea no matter how well they might look to you. Please allow at least 24 hours and check with your doctor for advice. Some viruses can be contagious for an extra day or so.
3. Bad pain - if your child has any pain that is more than mild, keep them home and check with your doctor.
4. Cough/Flu - this too is a sign of infection and medicine won't stop them from being contagious to others.
5. Illness Medication - If your child has an illness that is being treated with antibiotics, they often need a minimum of at least 24 hours of treatment before returning to school. Medication should be administered by parents at home.
While it is important for children not to be absent from school, it is also important for them to be well enough to learn and not share contagious illnesses for others to get sick. It is best to seek medical advice and allow your child time to rest and recover. Please always notify the school and where possible provide a medical certificate when they are well enough to return.
Please do not bring your child to school if uncertain and "See how they go. Let the teacher know" as children usually tell the teacher and the school will contact you. As a school we need to consider your child's wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. When it comes to your child's health and the health of students and staff, it is better to be safe than sorry.
Application for Leave
When families are taking holidays during the school term for 10 days or more, an Application for Leave must be completed, with notice, and submitted at the School Office. This application is required to be approved by the School Principal prior to the leave commencing and a Certificate of Extended Leave will be issued for the parents to have with them during their travels. Please see the attached form for further information.

At the end of Term 1, we had a large number of lost property items. These items do not have any names on them. Please check your child/ren's items are all clearly labeled so that we can return these when misplaced ie jackets, jumpers, hats, lunchbox, and drink bottles.
Please feel free to donate your preloved and outgrown school uniforms to the
School Office. Thank you
