Dear Parents and Carers
Reflection: Matthew 25:1–13
In last Sunday's Gospel, Matthew writes of the parable of ten bridesmaids waiting for the groom. Some of the bridesmaids are wise, and some are unpractical. The parable reminds us that the wise have the spiritual wisdom of love, faith and forgiveness. It helps us focus on the here and now, learn to live totally in the present, and seek and find God there. Matthew also reminds us to be responsible, prepared, and mindful of the timing of important events in our lives. Live each day, making it our best, and make wise choices so that we can fully enjoy the celebrations and opportunities that come our way.
With just over a month of school left this term, there are still plenty of wonderful learning opportunities as the students and their teachers work towards the end of the year. We encourage everyone, especially our Year 6 students and their families, to make the most of the next few weeks and cherish the special moments during this time.
Students' behaviour can change as we head into these last few weeks of the school year. Many adults find this time of year busy, and our children can feel tired and anxious. With some added social events and late nights, it is not uncommon for children to 'test the boundaries' as they fatigue. This can result in friendship difficulties on the playground, poor decisions, and being reactive and more emotional than usual. Supporting children during these times is extremely important. Please continue to contact our staff if your child feels tired or unsettled or if regular routines change due to work commitments or the busyness of the end of the year. Please let us know where we can be of any assistance.
On Monday, we celebrated World Kindness Day. A day where we promoted and celebrated acts of kindness. This day serves as a reminder of the positive impact that kindness has on individuals, communities, and the world at large. Kindergarten had a special message for us. It is cool to be kind!
Thank you for your ongoing support.

Police Youth Liaison Visit
Recently, our Year 5 and 6 students had the privilege of a special visit from Officer Jo, our school Police Youth Liaison Officer. During the presentation, Officer Jo addressed critical and timely subjects, including cyber safety, responsible social media use, anti-bullying strategies, and crime awareness. This engaging presentation proved to be an invaluable educational experience for our students. Early next year, we will engage the services of our Police Youth Liaison Officer and hold a parent and carers workshop at school.
Uniform expectations
As the weather warms, it is important for the students to be wearing their hats whenever they are outside. It is also an expectation and shows great respect for our school when we see the students wearing the correct full summer uniform. We ask for parent support in reminding your child to wear the correct uniform daily. Thank you to those parents who have notified your class teachers about their child who may have outgrown their school shoes. We understand parents are waiting for the new school year to purchase new shoes.Â
Lost Property
Once again, our lost property basket is overflowing. We now have two large tubs of lost property. If your child has lost a lunch box, school jacket, polo and all-weather jacket. Please ask them to check the lost property tubs. Thank you.
The last day of school for students this year is Friday 15th December.
Please continue to read your Compass notifications regarding upcoming events and important end-of-year information.Â
School dates for 2024
Please note that students in Years 1 - 6 return for the 2024 school year on Wednesday 31 January. Kindergarten commences school on Wednesday 7 February.
Our PB4L focus during Week 6 has been Being Responsible, specifically Taking Care of School Property. It is important that students treat school property with respect, so we can enjoy our facilities and comfortable spaces at our school.
Examples of what we have been working on in week 6 are:Â
- Caring for the play equipment,
- Reporting any damage or accidents that happen in the school,
- Keeping their class area tidy, and
- Keeping the toilets clean and tidy.
Our Social and Emotional Learning focus has been: Being an Upstander. Being an upstander means helping someone in need, and not watching things happen. If we see someone who needs help, we should support them the best way we can. This can be by asking if they are OK, stopping the negative behaviour of others, or seeking a teacher to help.
As part of our PB4L rewards systems, students are awarded Happy Cards, for following our rules of "Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe" while playing. When a student has received 10 Happy Cards, they receive a Playground Award and a small treat. After they have received 20 Happy Cards, they receive a Citizenship Award and a Bronze Medallion. After they have received 40 Happy Cards, they receive a Citizenship Award and a Silver Medallion. Congratulations to the following students who received their Playground awards at the Week 5 Assembly.Â
Playground Award: Mia O, Riott R, Samuel D and Daniel F.
2023 Talent Show

First Holy Communion Program
Please continue to keep in your prayers the children and families in our school and parish who are nearing the end of their preparation period. Â
A reminder that a sausage sizzle and rehearsal for the families involved in the First Holy Communion program will take place at St Mary of the Rosary, Berkeley tonight (Thursday 16 November), commencing at 6pm.Â
Month of November for All Souls
As noted in our last newsletter, throughout the month of November, our Church encourages us to pray for those who have died. Here is the prayer we have been using for our morning assemblies.
Loving God, we prayerfully remember all our loved ones who have died:
those who passed away peacefully, those who suffered great pain,
and those who died too soon, in sudden and unexpected ways.
We thank you for our memories of them and for the good times we shared.
We pray that all of our loved ones are at peace,
knowing that they will rest in Your love eternally.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

Dragon Tag Gala Day
Words from Manee, Jasmin, Daniel and Hassan
"The Oztag Gala Day was held last Thursday at Reed Park, Dapto. Students from Years 3 to 6 competed against other schools. It was a fun opportunity to meet new people and form friendships throughout the day. We also developed new skills on the field and improved our strategies to compete for the ball and attempt to create tries. We laughed together, discussed tactics and pointers, and supported one another in every game. Although the day was hot and we were surrounded by flies, it was still a great opportunity to have lots of fun with friends".
Congratulations to every student who showed great sportsmanship and represented St. Francis of Assisi with pride. Thank you to Mr Gilmore, Mrs Briscoe, Mr Green, Mrs Matos, Mrs Adams and Miss Croman for your support and encouragement.

Celebration of Learning Assembly
On Friday, 3 November, our Year 6 Gold students had an opportunity to share their learning with the school community at their celebration of learning assembly. During the assembly, they enacted the Parable of the Sower, presented their Christmas Story artworks, captivated us with their answers to the 1% Club, and shared some of the investigations made during their Science lessons. Thank you, Mr Gilmore and the students, for showcasing your learning. Congratulations on your commitment to your learning, Year 6 Gold.
Year 1 has had a wonderful week in and out of the classroom. Congratulations Year 1 on your amazing spelling and teamwork. Keep up the great work!

Thank you to our students and families for supporting St Francis of Assisi Book Fair 2023. The students have loved the opportunity to look at and purchase books. A special thank you to Ms Martins for her organisation and Mrs Burrows for her support.Â

Below is a flyer outlining the end-of-year dates for our Year 6 students. The students have received a copy of this flyer to put on their fridge. All these dates are on the parent calendar in Compass. We have had a few parents asking if they can assist with preparations for the Year 6 Graduation.
We are always grateful for any assistance from our parent community.
If you would like to help out, please fill in the Google form on the link below, and we will be in touch to organise a time to meet.
A friendly reminder the Compass account for Year 6 students will automatically close at the end of the school year. Please remember to log in and download your child's school reports for your own records before Friday 16 December 2022.
2024 Student Leader Process and Policy
At St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School, we recognise and value the development of leadership qualities in our students. With this as a focus, student leaders are elected from the Year 5 cohort at the end of each year to represent the school throughout the following year. It is coming to that time of year, where our Year 5 students are learning about leadership and preparing their speeches to support their interest in being nominated for different leadership roles.Â
Please see the attached document, which outlines the policy and procedure for this important journey. This has recently been updated to reflect a shift in philosophy, whereby students and staff are encouraged to vote for the students they feel demonstrate the desired leadership qualities, aligned to our school values. Please contact Mr Murphy or Mr Green if you have any questions about this. Â
Year 5 students will present their speeches to students and staff in Year 3-5 in Week 8 this term, before the voting process takes place.Â
2024 Student Responsible Technology Agreement
The Student Responsible Use of Technology Agreement is required to be signed annually for every student. This will be submitted online via Compass for parents to complete for 2024.
