Dear Parents and Carers,
Early this week, I communicated the changes to the staged return timeline for all NSW schools. Under the new timeline announced by the NSW Premier, students across the state will now return to face-to-face learning according to the following schedule:
- 18 October 2021: Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 12
- 25 October 2021: All remaining year groups
Principal
- Reassure your children about returning to school.
- Start conversations about school routines and prepare them for possible changes in some school activities.
- Set the alarm to get children ready to wake at a particular time.
- Have a set recess and lunch break; you could even pack it in their lunchbox.
- Return to your regular bedtime routine.
- Be prepared, some children may be emotional. They may need some extra support.
- Talk about how each family member is feeling. For example, if younger children find it hard to express their feelings, they could draw or write how they are feeling.
Please see below an article that will help families transition back to school after lockdown.
There has been a number of significant changes to previously-announced arrangements for all NSW schools. As we prepare for the staged return to face-to-face learning from Monday 18 and 25 October 2021, please find below a co-signed letter that was sent to all parents on Monday 11 October.
As new information becomes available to us, we will provide updates to keep you informed.
We are extremely excited to be welcoming our first group of students back to school next week.
Welcome to Term 4! I hope you and your family had an opportunity to take some time out and slow down over the recent holiday break.
Return to School
We have noticed that the connection with friends and classmates has been a challenge during remote learning. Classroom zooms have helped to reconnect students, but it isn't quite the same. Some students have spoken about their parents organising Zoom Playdates, which has provided a great opportunity for them to rekindle friendships. When the time comes for the children to come back to school, this important connection with friends and classmates will help alleviate any anxiety they may feel.
This week why not catch up with friends over zoom or telephone. Your child may need some help to start the conversation. Possibly, give them a theme so they have something that will spark the discussion. I am sure once they get started, the conversations will flow.
Thank you to all the families that have participated in the meditation activities. I hope it is helping your well-being. I have included the resources we have used this week.

UNSW/ICAS Assessments
Each year we provide the opportunity for students in Years 3-6 to participate in the University of New South Wales Competitions. These online competitions are for students who wish to experience extension and further challenge. Last week we had three students participate in the ICAS Writing Assessment. The other assessments will be conducted when the students return to school.
Math - Problem Solving
Problem-solving is a fundamental means of developing mathematical knowledge at any level. It allows students to develop the ability to make choices, interpret, formulate, model, and investigate problem situations, and communicate solutions effectively. They formulate and solve problems using mathematics to represent unfamiliar or meaningful situations, design investigations and plan their approaches, apply strategies to seek solutions, and verify that their answers are reasonable. Here are some open-ended Maths tasks that children can solve to help them develop problem-solving skills:
Look at the calendar. Draw a square around 9 of the numbers. What do you notice?
Prompts: If I tell you the top left number, can you tell me the bottom right number? If I tell you the middle number, what can you tell me?
Extension: What if the figure can be any rectangle? A cross? What if we replace the calendar with a number grid?
Problem 2:
Some people claim rolling a six is harder than rolling a two. Roll a die many times, collect and record your data. Make a convincing argument using your data and other ideas about the claim.
Extension: Extend the situation to a 10-sided die or rolling two dice and finding the sum. Think of some claims and investigate.
Thank you for your ongoing support and co-operation.
Together we can do this! Have a wonderful weekend, and remember to social distance wherever you go!

Religious Education & Parish News
Thank you to everyone for celebrating our feast day in different circumstances this year. I would particularly like to thank all those who participated in the liturgy. We have had a few liturgies while we have been in lockdown, and with your support, we have been able to pray together in a truly meaningful way through these liturgies.
Socktober for Mission Month 2021 - Mission Sunday is 24th October
Socktober is, first and foremost, a means through which schools and students can celebrate World Mission Month in October. Catholic Mission encourages us to engage with our mind, heart, and hands. This entail three elements:
-
Listen - to the 'note of greatest need' in our neighbouring community of Thailand;
-
Pray - for God to give our neighbours strength to prevail and ourselves the strength to respond
-
Act - on the lack of resources in this community to enable them to continue to live with the dignity they deserve.
St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church - Sacraments
Many of you would be anxious to find out about what is happening with Sacraments this year. Confirmation will be going ahead at this stage, and Fr Damien is meeting with the team next week to plan further arrangements. Reconciliation and First Communion will be discussed at this meeting, and any decisions made will be communicated as soon as possible.
Some upcoming calendar events for Term 4:
All Saints' Day | 1 November |
All Souls' Day | 2 November |
Remembrance Day | 11 November |
Parish Sacrament of Confirmation | To be confirmed |

Messages from Bishop Brian Mascord
To coincide with the feast day of St Francis of Assisi (4 October), Bishop Brian Mascord has released a pastoral letter to the people of God on the diocese’s response to Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ Action Platform.
In Laudato Si’, Pope Francis reflects upon the Gospel of Creation and offers a renewed theology of the natural world in light of Scripture, Tradition, and Catholic social teaching. Creation is one interrelated community before God, and humanity is grounded in three fundamental and closely intertwined relationships: with God, with our neighbour, and with the earth itself. Our task as human beings is to steward the flourishing of all three relationships.
Pope Francis challenges the people of the world to appreciate that we can no longer be in denial, indifferent, or blindly confident in technical solutions to earth’s crises. Nor can we any longer adopt a simple cosmetic approach to environmental and human crises. Whilst campaigns, recycling, and emergency appeals remain compelling, concern for the environment “is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience” (LS, 217).
Diocesan Sport Trial Nominations for 2022
Dear Year 4 and Year 5 Parents,
Every year the Diocese of Wollongong conducts trials for a variety of sports for students in Years 5 and 6. Students who are successful during these trials represent the Diocese of Wollongong at MacKillop Level (against elite students from Wagga, Canberra/Goulburn, Sydney & Parramatta) and if selected, may represent at the NSWPSSA State level as a member of the MacKillop team.
Students are required to be experienced players and extremely talented at their chosen sport. These trials are not gala days or school-based carnivals. They have not been designed for students “to come and try or for the experience”. They are for students who are elite at their sport and expect to make it to the next level.
Please refer to CEO sports web for specific event details and criteria (https://www.dow.catholic.edu.au/sport/events-primary/)
Base criteria need to be met to attend these trials. Below is the background information you should specify in your nomination:
- years played
- representative experience and teams (preferred not essential)
- any outstanding achievements in the sport
All student nominations are sent to trial conveners for approval. Students who have been nominated for a sport will then be informed if they have been successful or unsuccessful to attend the Wollongong trials. Successful students will receive a letter from the school detailing the trial, times, gear requirements etc...
More information including nomination forms for 2022 trials will be sent to you via Compass in the coming days.
Any questions, please let Mr Murphy know.
CatholicCare - Return to School Support
Thank you, Mrs Welch!
Each day during remote learning, our Pastoral Support Worker Mrs Cecilia Welch has provided the staff and students with some daily well-being activities. She has also been attending class zoom sessions and reading stories to Kindergarten. The students have enjoyed connecting with Mrs Welch and engaging in the tasks she has provided. Thank you, Mrs Welch. We appreciate all you do for our school community.
A Pastoral Care Worker (PCW) is a positive role model who brings genuine compassion, understanding and ongoing support to students and families.
PCW’s work alongside and complement other welfare and well-being staff in schools.
Pastoral Care Workers’ main tasks are:
- To support the school in its aim to be a safe and supportive learning environment
- To support the well-being of students, staff, and families
- To link families to community resources and services
Mrs Welch will be back on site from 20 October and is looking forward to continuing to support the staff and students as they transition back to school.
Enrolments are OPEN for 2022. Please let your family and friends know. The enrolment application form is available from the School Office or can be downloaded from the link below.
When students begin their staged return to school from 18 and 25 October, under Covid directives, they can return in their summer school uniform.
Please ensure all uniform pieces are clearly labeled with your child’s name using a permanent marker. Students should know where their name is marked for easy checking. Please encourage your child to place all items straight into their bag rather than leaving them on the playground or in the classroom.
School Uniforms are available for purchase online via Lowes online, link below. Please order with enough time for the current delivery delays.

We advise the Catholic Education Office has processed crediting school fee accounts for activities the students, unfortunately, have not been able to participate in due to COVID. The credits applicable will be shown on your account in the Compass Parent Portal. Please do not hesitate to contact the School Office if you have any questions.
Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) have made available support to families, conscious of the significant financial impact that many may be experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions. Please find below detailed information regarding support for families through COVID-19 restrictions and school fee payments. As always, please do not hesitate to contact the school about any matters you wish to discuss, especially those related to financial hardship.
